N/B: The list of all makeup brushes is very long and comprehensive especially for professionals so we will only cover the basic must-haves that a newbie should have in their makeup brush kit.

Makeup brushes can generally be classified into two categories:

  1. General Face brushes
  2. Eye Area brushes

GENERAL FACE BRUSHES

These are used for face makeup. The types of makeup brushes and their different uses include:

  • Foundation Brush

– As the name suggests, it is used for applying foundation. A good foundation brush should be dense, have soft firm bristles and be tailored according to the type of foundation one is using e.g. liquid, cream or compact foundation all have different brushes that we will cover in a later blog post.

  • Contour Brush

-It is used for contouring the face which includes adding back structure such as cheek bones to the face. A good contour brush should be angled and have soft bristles.
  • Powder Brush

 – It is used to distribute loose powder evenly across your face without dispensing too much product and make your makeup look cakey. A good powder brush should be dense and fluffy with soft bristles.
  • Blush Brush

– It is a makeup brush used for creating a flawless airbrushed look after the application of all the makeup products. It is more of a ‘clean up brush’. You can also use it to apply blush onto the cheeks. A good stippling brush should be light and firmly bristled.
  • Fan Brush

– It is a makeup brush used to apply highlighter, brush away makeup mistakes and blend out dark lines. It looks like a fan as shown in the picture below.

  EYE AREA BRUSHES

The various makeup brushes in this category include:

  • Brow Brush

–  An angled brow brush contains flat, blunt angled bristles that are used to help you draw individual brow hairs and conceal the eyebrows.
  • Spoolie

-A spoolie is a multipurpose brush that can be used to comb eyebrows, separate lashes and remove mascara clumps.
  • Eye Shadow Packing Brush

– It is a makeup brush that is used for packing eyeshadow pigment onto eyelids. You can have as many of these as you want depending on how playful you love to get with your eyes. They are usually flat, rounded at the tip and dense as shown below.
  • Angled Eye Shadow Brush

– It is a makeup brush used to blend out eyeshadow for a sheer diffused finish. It usually has a tapered shape and has soft and fluffy bristles.
